To 4962: Thanks for your kind replies. I think I am just annoyed at the fact that lots of bands don’t even try to be “metal” in the first place yet just because they are lumped into that category by the media and the fans, their music are gonna get judged based on the “metal” criteria - and if they don’t meet those, of course metal fans will hate them for not being “metal” enough (because apparently using criteria for this genre to judge another genre is a good idea). Same goes with lots of nu-metal bands. I don’t like nu-metal, but don’t think they deserve the hate they get either.
FYI, here is what Sharon said in an old interview when being asked to describe their sound “I think I would call it melodic, symphonic rock. And with a lot of film influences, some metal influences and folk influences. Different kinds of genres we put in one kind of style and just mixed it. It’s very cinematic I think … storytelling.” I tend to agree with this.
